And, yeah, I’m a fucking weak, pathetic loser who ruined the one good thing that I ever had because I wanted a rapist to think I was just like him.
~ Alex Standall, EP12

Some people have a difficult time to face him/herself, but they are courageous enough to face their true self. To face one’s true feelings, real thoughts, true behaviors, and real reactions from other people are not easy. It brings you extremely painful reactions such as shame, guilt, disappointment, hopeless, etc., and possibly rejection to oneself. Justin: Jess, please, I was trying to protect you.
Jessica: Protect me? Seriously?
Justin: I thought if you didn’t know, if no one found out…
Jessica: What? I’d be fine? I’d go about my life? You and I would get married and live happily ever after?
Justin: That’s what I wanted, was for us to to be together. Forever.
Jessica: You let him.
Justin: No, I was drunk. And I was scared.
Jessica: So was I.
Justin: Bryce was at the…..
Jessica: Don’t say that name!
Justin: I’m sorry, it’s just that, every time I was thrown out, when my mom was fucked up, one of her boyfriends was fucking with me he was there for me. When I had no money, when I was starving, his folks bought my shit for school. Okay, when my mom was busted for possession, he got his dad to bail her out.
Jessica: They do that shit so they can own you.
Justin: No. Okay? Last year, I couldn’t afford new shoes for basketball. I went through four pairs that season. When we got to playoffs, they just had, like, holes. Bryce didn’t offer to buy me new shoes. He pretended he had an extra pair.
Jessica: Justin. Are you seriously trying to make excuses for what you did?
Justin: No. I just want you to understand.
Jessica: And I want you to understand what it’s like to be raped. But I truly hope you never will.

Facing Your Fear of You
Takeaway points:
1. Fear is an emotion that has no right or wrong.
2. Fear to see our true self is the issue, not fear
3. When Fear dictates your choices, fear becomes the problem.
4. The fear to face our true self is a message to tell us that there are contradictions in our values that we can’t reconcile within ourselves.

Sadly, most of the people live their lives through the motion. We don’t reflect too much on how we see ourselves, and we don’t think carefully about how we see other people. We tend to focus on the tasks at hand and just try to get through the day.

From “13 Reasons Why” to “Facing Your Truth”— “Truth”

I have heard so many stories about me now, but I don’t know which one is the most popular, but I do know which is the least popular: the truth.

~ Hannah Baker, EP 1.

When I started watching this drama, I didn’t know what to expect. I was like a detective trying to piece out the clue at each episode as to “what went wrong”? I wrote down different quotes from different characters to realize the entire drama can be summarized around this word: “Truth.”

To be honest, I don’t watch TV as often as I used to be.

However, when I heard many of my clients mention a TV show or a movie frequently enough at the same time, it’s my cue to do my homework, which means, “go watch it so that you know what your clients are talking about.”

In the past six months, the “homework” I have been doing is this show, “13 Reasons Why.”
